The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust: Innovation Pop-Up

Bringing the private sector to the NHS’ front door

Background

Leeds’ healthcare sector has historically been a hotbed for innovation. The first medical thermometer was invented in Leeds, and it was the first city to use AI in healthcare in the 1970s.

The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust was keen to continue the tradition by establishing a hub for businesses and researchers to collaborate with NHS staff and drive innovation in healthcare (by developing new medtech, for example) to improve patient outcomes.

The brief

The Trust brought in Richardsons to collaborate with sponsors such as Fujitsu and bring the space – named the Innovation Pop-Up – to life. The space needed to be modern and extremely flexible to make it suitable for small meetings, exhibitions, and talks.

As LGI is a Grade II-listed building, the space’s design and installation also needed to be sympathetic to the building’s history.

Our approach

The Richardsons team collaborated closely with Fujitsu to bring the vision for the Innovation Pop-Up to life. Our team’s expertise was essential in finding Leeds Teaching Hospitals furniture that met the Trust’s needs but was also cost-effective and suitable for the building’s listed status.

The result

The flexible hospital furniture at Leeds General Infirmary has created an adaptable space for NHS staff to collaborate with the private sector.

Flexible furniture

Modular healthcare furniture creates a flexible, multi-purpose space that’s easily adapted to suit staff’s needs.

Large screens

High-quality screens throughout the Innovation Pop-Up can be used for events or to display the latest updates.

Soft seating areas

Comfortable chairs and coffee tables offer spaces for informal discussions between NHS staff and external collaborators.

High tables & stools

High tables and seating areas provide alternatives to low seating for shorter meetings and collaborative sessions

The impact

Since the Innovation Pop-Up opened, it has become a thriving hub of activity and collaboration between the private sector and the NHS. This has led to new medtech and ways of working that is already positively impacting patients in Leeds and Yorkshire.
